01/28/99- If you support the notion of having WRS port all this business (yes, dangit, I'm talking about the host tools!) to any open source platform , please drop me a note, and I'll include you in a compiled list of supporters, to be submitted to WRS senior management soon.
02/01/99- Yowzah...my inbox has been swamped for a couple of days with
port survey votes. Some rough numbers are here, but keep
the votes coming.
02/09/99- Nearly a hundred emails on behalf of about 120 seats....when
we hit 100 emails I'm sending the results in!
02/19/99- Apparently this issue is going to bew brought up at
a high-level meeting WRS is holding next week. I have been asked
to fw a summary of the votes. I have 95 votes, representing 138 users/seats.
At COB today, I'm passing the tarred mailbox with all the votes, along
with a summary.
02/22/99- WRS has the first 98 actual vote emails in their hands,
and I gave them a verbal that there are 131 votes (4 are WRS employees)
in house.
02/25/99- No word from WRS prolly till next week. I've
got 139 votes now.
Yes, please ask WRS to port VxWorks to Linux (or a BSD system) =
139
No, this idea stinks = 2
Thanks to everyone who sent in a vote, especially considering there's no way I can answer every response personally in the near future.
02/26/99- I've launched an Open
Source RTOS Resources page.
02/26/99- Today's nasty RTOS lesson: Debugging
your VxWorks kernel resets from 200Mmiles.
03/02/99- WRS says they will give me an answer on the porting issue
Real Soon Now.
03/09/99- Bug in munch script found/fixed.
03/15/99- A Tornado shell for Linux is now available. See below.
Many thanks go out to the originator of this page, Kevin Bradley, who has authored most of the technical content kept here. He is a credit to the CMU Technical Alumni.
WindRiver doesn't support Linux like it supports Solaris, HP-UX, or Windows -- there are no supplied tools. However, Linux has certain attractions, as it's somewhat more stable than Windows, is cheaper, and so forth. Plus, NT doesn't ship with a good set of TCP/IP utilities: bootp, tftp, NFS server/client.
The directions which used to follow here have been split off into the two pages of those listed below for '...x86 target'. The idea is that you read the instruction for x86 targets, and adapt them to your target. You should also check the general page to see if there are non-target-specific utilities you can use. Hopefully I'll have info on other platforms as time goes by, as well as a complete set of the general instructions. Since I'm both dumb and busy, I could use some help from userland here.
Non-Local Resources:
See Building GNU Compilers, with a GNAT for VxWorks section, covering m68k, ppc, and i960 arches. Thanks Dan!
Wish List:
-A target server that works under Linux.
-makeSymTbl ...hold it, we got that on the general
page now.
-cross-compiling for PPC to work.
-VxSim under Linux.
-egcs cross-compiling.
